You’ve probably heard of hospice, but you may be unfamiliar with the details concerning this philosophy of medical care. Rather than a place to receive medical care, hospice is an approach to medical care for patients nearing the end of life. Its goal is to enhance the quality of life for patients with terminal illness. Hospice focuses on pain management and symptom relief, while addressing the patient’s emotional, social and spiritual needs—as well as those of family members. Hospice lets patients and families share the end-of-life experience with dignity and, in most cases, in the comfort of their own homes.
When faced with Hospice care, special planning may be necessary. We can help guide you and your loved ones through the legal planning steps that should be taken if you decide to enroll in hospice. These may include choosing the appropriate Power of Attorney, preparing an Advance Health Care Directive; revising Wills and Trusts; preparing a Special Needs Trust for the protection of a disabled child or an incapacitated surviving spouse; changing property titles; devising strategies for family gifts (where appropriate); long-term care strategies; and many more.
